Default Bats Aprilia SR50 "Max"

I bought this scooter from 4Ari back in 2013. All stock with all decals removed it was able to do 50 MPH! Not bad for a 50cc scooter!

When I purchased the sweet scoot it came with an uninstalled, nearly new, carbon fiber canister, Leo Vince ZX-R pipe with the stipulation that the SR was way faster with the stock pipe. This puzzled me as usually a performance pipe on a two stroke is like a high flow down pipe on a turbo car, simply amazing! So with all this in mind I gave it a go installing the pipe and after a quick ride to the park with my son, it was definitely much slower than it was with the stock pipe. Google revealed a bunch of other just like me who put a Leo Vince on and was slower for their efforts. Was this pipe made for the ruckus crowd who cruise slow and low? Well the forums revealed that none of us bothered looking in the header to see if there was a restrictor inside as these pipes were made for the EU market who have strict regulation on scooter power. After finding this key info and removing the pipe, close inspection revealed the problem!

A little Dremel work would take care of this quick, but mine was 20 miles away! Luckily I had just received an order of tungsten carbide bits that were scheduled for duty on my upcoming Derbi project, but more on that later. With tungsten bits, my handy Craftsman 19.2v, and a bunch of sweat and tears, mission accomplished!

The culprit exposed!

After this speed mod a fast 55mph test ride was in order! Definitely made a huge difference!

One thing that has always bugged me about the looks of the SR50 has been the silver tunnel covers in the middle of the black scooter. It bothered me even more when I happened to see a brand new 2014 SR 50 at Scuderia and it came with the covers in matching black so I had to research and find out the part numbers for the 2014 pieces to swap mine out. A quick search revealed the three part numbers needed to order the covers:
LH Tunnel Black- AP8269396 ----Price $14.99 Updated 2018 Pricing $16.99
RH Tunnel Black- AP8269395 ---- Price $14.99 Updated 2018 Pricing $16.99
Tunnel Cover Black- AP8269397 ---- Price $10.99 Updated 2018 Pricing $12.99

As you can see the silver stands out like a sore thumb.

The worst part about the silver is they are in high contact areas so they easily accumulate black scuff marks from shoes and if painted would probably start to peel or chip quickly due to excessive contact.

After 15 minutes of turning screws and allen bolts the new black molded pieces are in place and looking the way it should have come from Italy in the first place!

When I bought the bike from 4Ari it came with all black fairings and 98.7% of all the decals removed. Since I use this scooter 5 days a week to pick up my son from school I wanted to make it look a little more race and more deserving of the name Max.

A quick trip to Scuderia West, my local Aprilia Dealer, and Bob helped me look up a great looking piece to start the Max SBK transformation. Since mine had a cracked mounting point it made sense to spend the $50 on the replacement.

And here it is installed

I need to install the little trim piece on the bottom from my old one, but it looks a lot flasher than the old plain black one!

Over the years I have picked up a couple decal sets for the Sr50 so I figured it time to start installing some of them. First up the Alitalia to replace the SR under the number 3 and the Came sponsor stickers on the corners. Rapid Tac and small decal install tool are invaluable.

The finished product!

Had a little more time to spend with the beautification of Max.

Now I think Max need Red Winglets! Funny that the MotoGp bikes have winglets now! Im sure they derived them from the SR50 technology!

Added a few more graphics to the sides. I've done about as much as I can with the graphics, but I still feel its missing something. I have the red aero wings on order and I'm thinking the red belly pan may be next after that.

Max has been the everyday school pickup scoot for my son for the entire school year this year so with summer approaching it's time to get some maintenance done so its ready for next year! The plan as of now is refresh and inspect the CVT components, gear oil, air filter, spark plug, tires, and air injection filter.

Got a delivery from AF1 today with a few goodies to help complete the maintenance. Malousy air filter, piaggio drive belt, Polini 5gm rollers, and the buzzetti tool.

Spent a little time working on Max yesterday and managed to get the Malossi air filter, Polini rollers, OEM drive belt, and red winglets all installed!

The CVT in all it’s glory!

Variator and belt removed, doesn’t look to bad in there.

Worn stockers on the right and new Polini on the left. Luckily have a near new complete assembly so I didn’t have to clean my old one this time around.

Once that was all buttoned up, it was time for the air filter.
Here are a couple shots of the old stock next to the new Malousy filter.

And Malousy in place!

A couple of sweet gold Ergal bolts to complete the job!

In the end I decided to leave the black plastic cover off and just roll showing the powerful 50cc!

A couple Polini Stickers complete the bike!
